Sears water softner won't soften

Several years ago I bought a new sears softener. I have it hooked up to soften the cold water as it comes into the house. The problem is you would get one good soft fill of the water heater and thats it. The water would feel hard after. If you forced a recharge then it would soften again. Its not the timers it recharges when it supposed too.The cold water felt no different soap would not lather. Sears came out and tested water..yep its soft. (NOT) I wasn't home at the time. I finally just put in bypass. I checked every thing I could think of. I have put several of these units in with no trouble. Its a Deluxe Demand. I live alone so its not an over usage problem

Any thoughts??

If the hardness has risen since it was first installed, you would get intermitten soft water. Get a hardness test and recheck the hardness setting on the unit. If there is iron in the water, it will use up capacity. Get some resin cleaner. Check the brine flow control. If it is partly clogged, you will lose capacity.
