Can someone please help me - I need to change the charcoal in this softener - at this time I am unable to afford $300. I have had this softener since 1997 - it is wonderful - I have had the charcoal changed 3 times in the past.

So our house is very dusty - we live on a busy street, and have cats. We want to get our ducts cleaned and at the same time replace the old electrostatic filter unit that doesn't work. We want a media filter, and are looking for suggestions. I really would like HEPA but I understand that is too restrictive.
