Question Standing water level in water softener

I have a sears water softener which is about 8 years old. We add salt about 4 times a year. This time we noticed that water was above the salt level and it is leaving salt residue higher inside on the walls of the tank. We never noticed water in there before. Is this normal?

No not if more then 1/4 filled. Sounds like the venturi is clogged. Read your manual and clean. Its not drawing the brine to clean the resin bed.

That is correct, there should be little to no water in the brine tank part of the sears unit, it adds water at the start of the regen.
Either the venturi is plugged and not pulling the brine out or the float assembly is higher than it should be, make sure that it is setting as far down as possible. Some times adding salt will push the tubing down and pull the float assembly up where it is no longer setting on the bottom like it should be.
