Water Softener maintenance

Do you need to have someone come in and maintain a water softener? If so - how often and what exactly would they do (seems like a very straight-forward piece of equipment - put salt in and it works)

It is not necessary to have someone do it for you as long as you can lift the bags of salt.

I can put bags of salt in it. I was under the impression that in addition to that it needed to be serviced about once a year

That's a personal preference. If you want someone to look at it you can. If it's not broke, why pay someone to check it. It would be the same princibiles as your wash machine. Do you pay someone to check it out once a year?

Get the water tested for hardness; that will tell you if you need to change settings/frequencies and such.
