Kenmore Water Softner/Coffee Machine

All my life we have had whole house water softeners. I recently purchased and now everytime I fill the coffee pot with water it overflows when we try to brew. Again, I have never had this issue with other softeners we have owned.

GPG of hardness is 12 (according to county water management)
Softener is set at 12

In the interim I am bypassing the unit and filling jugs of water with hard water to avoid the mess and be able to have my morning coffee. My only solution at this point is to replumb the softner only to the hot water side. I have read several sites that say not to use soft water for coffee and others say soft water is best for coffee.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I my self would have the hardness setting at 14 not 12.
I would also be looking at the coffee maker, the float assembly off or the fill solenoid in that it is either not working correctly or there is some thing stuck in the inlet of the solenoid.
