PH of 5.8 - Hardness of 9 gpg,
Based on a PH of 5.8, do I need to treat the PH issue before softening the well water or is a PH of 5.8 acceptable?
If I treat for PH, wouldn't I be removing the PH treatment with the water softener? I feel like I would be wasting money in treating the PH and having to use even more salt to get the water soft, since the water would get harder from the PH treatment... Am I wrong?

Do you have a recommendation on a product that will increase the PH?

There are several types to chose from. An in/out valve allow the water to flow through pH media whereas an automatic valve will backwash the media every few day keeping the media from getting hard. The cost range is from about $250-$700.

I noticed that the in/out valve systems are lower in price. Is there a drawback to using such? I prefer to keep the costs down because I wasn't planning on a acid neutralizer and I'm hoping to move in a year to a year and a half.
BTW, I tried a PH meter today that was calibrated to see how it compared to my water test. The PH meter came back with 5.92.. I guess my test was accurate...
Thanks!

pH media has a tendency to turn hard as cement if not kept churned up. With the in/out, it should be installed in an up-flow direction to help prevent this from happening. The media is used up as it raises the pH meaning you will need to replenish it over time.

You know what I don't understand .... I don't understand how one can have hard acidic water... Does what I have mean that if my water was naturally on the soft side that my water could have been even worse like a PH of 4?

What is the rest of the water test?
Iron?
Mn?
Flow rate for the house ?
One might need to use a mix of calcite and MagOx to get the ph up above 7.0
There is also the soda ash getting injected into the water stream with some form of holding tank to give the soda ash time to mix with the water and bring the ph up with out spiking high and then next to nothing.
