brown water after regeneration

water boss softener model 180
after each regeneration the water is brown. I have to run approximately 25 to 30 gallons down the sewer to get clear water. I have been on city water for many years, and have never had this problem. the softener was installed in july of 2019. it worked fine for about 2 months before this started. I don't know what to do about it. the factory told me to get a filter. this is the same city water I have used for 60 years and have never had a problem.

Mine had an similar issue but the water left a black ring. Mine had a filter cartridge thing inside that my installer had to repack. Cost me $300 I think but mine was 8 years old.

There could be several causes but I suspect the issue may be impurities in the salt, particularly rock salt. Are you using cheap salt? Change the salt (use salt pellets) and see if it continues.

BTW, adding a sediment filter can extend the life of your softener but the filter would be installed ahead of the softener so it wouldn't impact your problem.
