Well if you dont want to drill the spots out and have it fall off . You could try a very sharp chisel and work it under the edge of the handle Id have the inside of the basket on a iron mandrel When you do this. Are take a small hand grinder and just work away on each spot weld ED

If the handles are contact welded where you can't see the welds then prying and bending as Ed suggested might work and if welds are visible you may have to take a hack saw blade and cut the welds.

How thick are the handles at the weld?
