Lincoln AC welder amp switch

I have a 20 year old Lincoln AC welder. The amp switch has become very hard to turn......feels like it could break at any time. The unit sits in an old farm building and I'm thinking it may be full of mud dobber nests. Is there any need to pull the cover off and see what the problem is....or should I try to find a repair shop or just junk it and buy a new welder?

Thanks!

I assume your talking about one of the tomb stone welders.
I haven't opened up one of them. But if your good with your hands, unplug it and remove the cover for a look.
More then likely the shaft has corrosion and is binding with the bushing that the shaft goes thru.
You may need to disassemble the switch to clean and lubricate the bushing shaft.

Take some pictures, it may help you reassemble the welder.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, it is one of the tombstone type. I'm going to give it a try. Hard to weld with just one amp setting <g>.

Tombstones

While you're in there, put a drop of oil on the fan motor shaft also. Have had to open mine regularly for that maintenance since it has been getting older.
