Caliper Recommendations

I'm looking for a decent digital or dial caliper that is good quality but not so expensive. A quick online search shows calipers ranging from $20 up to almost $200. I like the idea of a dial caliper because there is no battery to replace.

I have purchased two now from Harbor Fright Tools and have been very happy with them. I have even used them when I was working in a machine shop and were just a good as the ones the "real" machinists were using. Battery lasts for over a year.

Look in local magazines and papers and you can find coupons for them for $10 or 20-25% off. Well worth it IMO!

I still regularly use a 50 year old Starrett dial caliper so I can attest to it's durability but I can only hope their current products are just as good. They are about $100 new for a 6" but you can find them used for much less.

Early last year I bought this digital Nieko from Amazon a year+ ago and it's still working. The original battery lasted about 6 months but the replacement I bought is still going.

I agree with TI....Harbor Freight (or one of their clones) or Grizzly will give you what you need.

Still don't know WHY you need it for reloading a pistol.

I'm a dial indicator kinda guy. Digital is nice, but not really needed most times...as I said before. Of course, thats from someone who refuses to get a smart phone or be on Facespace or Tweeker...so take it for what it's worth.

Don't you use it to measure case length?

On rounds that are only shot in one or 2 pistols that headspace on the case mouth with standard chambers, what's the point? Now, measuring overall length of a loaded round, maybe. Once the dies are set, there's not much need. Either they chamber or they don't.

I never measured case length on the .45s I shot through the 3 I had. Of course I didn't pick up trash rounds at the range either.

Bottleneck/tapered neck cases are another matter as I understand.

I'm not looking for a caliper for reloading, I'm putting together an xmas list for the wife and would simply like a new one.
