can you flux core weld over powder coating?

I have two pieces of metal that have been powder coated.
do I need to sand them down to bare metal before I flux core weld them or can I just go ahead and weld over the powder coating?

Sand down to bare metal. Powder coat paint is basically polyester so you often can't strike an arc or attach a ground without cleaning to bare metal. Once you have a spot cleared you can start your arc there and move into uncleaned areas where the heat burns off the paint. It makes a lot of smoke and makes a poorer quality weld so it's best to clean the entire area you intend to weld.

It's always best to have bare clean metal to weld to. Welding thru paint complicates things and makes it harder to get a nice weld.
