How to locate a cleanout...
Hi,
My 100-year old house is having some sewer problems. It appears the sewer line was clogged as there is sewage coming up through the drain in my basement. I had a plumber come and clean it out with a snake (roots), but he had to do it from inside my basement, since we couldn't locate a more accessible entry point (i.e. cleanout). This was pretty costly since he had to use an extended snake, (300 feet I think).
I have done some research with the public records, and apparently a cleanout was installed in 1962. There is a very roughly drawn diagram showing where the cleanout is. I have been digging and digging in the general area and have not been able to find it.
Is there a more straightforward way of locating this thing? How deep could this thing be if it was installed 40 years ago? It doesn't seem very likely that it would have been removed, but maybe it's not there.
Any suggestions? Thank you!

It might be pretty deep if the clean-out is for a line from under a basement. It may even be possible that you need a backhoe to expose it. Who knows? Keep digging, but be careful getting in an un-shored hole.
Good Luck!
