Smelly, Brown Well Water That tastes wierd!!!
I have well water (20 years), and lately the water has become really smelly (ie. sour wet clothes and rotten eggs). Cold or Hot water does not change the smell. I have to transport water to my grandmother's house in milk jugs, because her water is salty tasting, and if the water is allowed to set for a little bit, it gets a brown tinge to it. And it also tastes wierd. This just started happening in the past few weeks and I do not want to get City Water if I do not have to. It has not rained here lately, and I don't know if that has any bearing on the problem. I was wandering what I should do? Do you think that it is safe to drink?

You say it has not rained in a couple weeks, but do I understand that the problem started before that?
You can take a water sample to your local Health Department and they can test it to make sure it is safe to drink.
It is possible that your well has become contaminated. Does your well have a secure cover so nothing can get in? Have you tried chlorinating the well to sterilize it?
It is also possible that your well casing has rusted out and is letting surface water, rust and mud get into your well.
