sump pump making loud clacking & not draining

We have a pedestal sump pump that has been running for several days. The floater is free and moving properly. There has been water in the tank at a lower (slowly getting higher) level. Tonight we noticed it was almost full and we started to bail it out. As we bailed it out we noticed the water was filling back up. Once we unplugged it, the water seems to be holding at a lower level. I am not sure where this water is coming from. The motor sounds like it is damaged. Is it possible it is reverse pumping? Why would the water level increase when the pump is on?

Thanks,
Indigo

Hi indigo,
- reverse pumping is not possible. It sounds like the water you're pumping out is running right back somehow.
Where is it pumping to ? Can you see it where the pump outlet pipe ends?
Does the pump stop and start when you move the float rod to extremes?
Where is the check valve fitted, and have you looked in it for correct operation ?
Post me a pic if possible, use 'photobucket .com ' or similar.
