deep well pump occasionally does not kick on
My deep well pump does not kick on about once every two months. Pressure switch is set 30-50 and pressure tank at 28. The switch activates the chemical pump when the pressure drops below 30 but once in a while the well pump does not activate. The pump will then activate on its own between 5 to 20 minutes. It does not seem to happen in relation to heavy water use because it has happened first thing in the morning when someone showers. Well is 180 feet and I have not had water level checked. Could this be a problem with an old pump or with the wiring? Pressure switch is a few years old.

Hi,
Check the 1/4" pipe nipple that the pressure switch sits on. These nipples sometimes get stopped up with rust, scale, grit, etc. and will not let the switch sense the pressure. If the nipple is galvanized, then replace it with a brass one if possible.

The contacts can be cleaned with a small file (or an emery board works well too). BUT....please be sure all power to the pump motor is off before you work on the switch.
Down where I'm from, we're always finding ants or little black beetles smashed between the contacts. Sometimes, when the little boogers get fried enough, the pump will start on it's own.
