I can't find my well!!!

I bought a house last year from a woman who had lost her husband. She did not know anything about anything regarding the house. The survey does not show a well and I have not been able to find it. The pipe into the basement is in the rear of the house. My expansion tank is there so I assume it is in the rear as the septic is in the front. I recently picked up the plans from the county health department and they show it (in a hand drawn picture) 40ft from the back of the house. I checked and there is nothing there. Is it possible that it is buried?

I don't know the code where you live, but it was in the 60's when Michigan started making well drillers terminate the well above ground. If your well is from that era or earlier it's possible that it is buried.

If it is buried and your in the cold country, it's likely 4' or so deep.

The best tool for finding one is the Schonstadt locator. The yellow stick with the box on top you see surveyors walking around with. I have used one since the 70's when they first became available and they really work.
