How to close out a septic system?

We'll be getting city sewer soon, and when we do, we'll have to disconnect and close out our septic field. Do I have to physically remove the entire tank and field or can we just fill in the tank with dirt and bury it and leave it like that?

That will depend on your local codes. Normally you just the tank pump by a septic pumper and fill it sand or dirt.

We called the city health department, and they said the same thing. They said it was OK to leave the drainfield as-is, too

Thanks!
