Placing a Sump & Pump
I've got a wet basement.
Been in the house 1+ year, improved down spout placement, some light grading but still got 4-5 inches in the basement, once in spring, once in the fall. I believe a sump and pump will help the problem, but have conflicting advice about where to cut the slab and place the sump. Where the water comes in? or closer to where I want pump to discharge?
Water seeps in from the rear of the basement and my best route for the discharge is into the front yard. Thanks for any advice.

How many square feet is your basement ?. You may need more than one pump......if that is the case, you probably want them on opposite corners of the basement.
Do you have a finished basement ?. This will have a lot to do with your pump placement.
Also....check with your town....I had a problem with water being discharged too close to the house, and coming back in.....this made the pump run a lot....my town allows sump water to go out to the street sewer, so after I reran the pipe and got the water completely off the property, the problem was fixed.........

It all depends on what kind of soil you have. If it is sandy, you could put the pit anywhere and the water will easily reach its own level. If it is all clay, then it will be hard for the water to reach the pit.
I think you have to options
1) dig pit near where water comes in. Can you run the discharge pipe to the front of the house without problems???
2) dig pit near the front of the house and then if you still have issues with the water gettingin from the back, you can then install a french drain from the back to the front where the sump is.
Which option you choose depends on how easy is one is and the likelyhood of success.
