Sump Pump Always On - maybe

I have noticed today that my sump pump appears to be on even after it pumps the water out. By appears to be on I mean it hums. It has a diaphram switch so the float being stuck is not an issue. The strange thing is even though it hums, it does not pump water out until a certain level is reached. Do these pumps stay on for a bit even after pumping out the water? Does humming mean that it is on? I am sure that the pump in the past has been quiet (e.g. summer time) otherwise I would have heard it humming.

It sounds to me like the switch inside the switch housing is stuck in the on position. I see this quit a bit. Some of these switchs are rebuildable but I don't know what pump you have. If the pump is stuck on and pumping all the way down to the point where it sucks air it could be air locking for a moment as the water rises in the pit. If the pump is old I would probably replace it.
