Unhappy pump won't shut off and no water

HELP! This morning i had water ,everything was ok this afternoon icame home and pump is running and not shutting off and i have no water either.pump is above ground not submersible.my whole system was put in about 16 yrs. ago.Help soon i have no water. Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,
It sounds like the pump has lost prime, but the problem is 'why' did it lose prime?
It could be that the water level in the well is too low for the pump to lift the water.
A faulty footvalve could also be blamed.
If the pump ran for a period of time after it quit pumping water, it could also sustain internal damage.
Does the pump have one or two pipes between the well and pump? Have you tried to reprime the pump?
