Water Full of Sand

I have a shallow well at my cottage with a steel tank jet pump. My water is very sandy, both hot and cold. How can I fix this dirty water problem? In addition can I drain my hot water tank to get rid of any sand sitting on the bottom of the tank without losing pressure ore prime?

I look forward to any assistance offered.

Thank you,

Laclyons

The best way is to screen the well so you don't have to pump the sand. Otherwise, you just have to use a sand filter after the pressure tank. Is this a drilled well or a driven well?

Sand Full of Water

Thank you for your response. I believe it is a drilled well. There is water at the bottom that comes about one third of the way up the tiles.

What is the diameter of the well?
What is the depth of the well?
What is the water level in the well?
What is the depth to your foot valve?

Water full of sand

Me again,

I now have the answer to your questions;

What is the diameter of the well? - 3 feet
What is the depth of the well? - 22 feet
What is the water level in the well? - 3 feet
What is the depth to your foot valve? - 21 feet

I await your response.

Thank you

OK your foot valve is set a 21' and the well is only 22' deep. So you don't have room to add a sand screen to the bottom of you foot valve. This usually causes the well to fill up with sand anyway, because you are no longer pumping it out.

The diameter of your casing would allow you to run a liner. You could run 20' of 5" perforated casing, with a 3' blank on top. I would use .035 or .020 slots in the casing and gravel pack between the 5" casing and the 3' ID you have now. The gravel needs to be sized to the slot size, and needs to be almost as small as the sand. Then install the foot valve in the 5" casing. The gravel pack acts like a filter to keep sand out of the 5" casing.

Water full of Sand

Thank you for your help. Just one other thing. With in decrease in diameter of the pipe, will my water pressure increase?

How much cheaper would this fix be compared to having a Sand Point Well drilled?

water pressure is dependent on the pump horsepower/stacks
should be a lot cheaper than drilling a new well. however filling a 3 foot dia well with gravel pack of screened and sized gravel (sand) will be a good chunk, you might just install a whole house filter in the line from the pump to the house. the sand will have a tendency to wear the pump impellers though

life begins when the kids leave home and the dog dies
