I have a 3/4 hp. shallow well jet pumpon a water system which was installed last spring. It flows to a 44 gal. pressure tank, then the water line travels a distance of approximately 650 feet laterally and 12 feet vertically through 1 1/2 inch black plastic pipe to a distribution manifold, at which point the water is travels about 10 feet through a 1 inch line to an underground automatic livestock waterer. While working around the pump the last few days, I noticed that the pump will start, then immediately stop. It isn't on for more than 1/2 a second or so it seems, kind of like a pump with a waterlogged pressure tank and no faucets open. It may do this 2 or 3 times, then remain off for 30 seconds to a minute, then it will start again and run up to the maximum pressure and shut off. Since the frequency is unpredictable and based on when livestock decide to water, I can't watch the pressure gauge constantly. However, I do watch when it is cutting in and out and the pressure will shoot up to 40 lbs. or so, drop to 30, up to 40 with the cut in/cut out of the pump. The gauge will fluctuate a bit after the end of the false starts, then settle back down to about 30 lbs. After a minute or so, the pressure will drop to the cut in pressure and the pump will come on regular. The pressure switch is set for around 28/48. I am concerned that the short bursts of on/off will shorten the life of the pump and wondering what I can do to correct this? The way it is behaving, I am wondering if the valve in the livestock waterer is opening and I am getting a lag or "wave" of pressure due to the distance, causing the pressure at the pump to drop below cut-in, then surge past cut off in rapid succession. Is this what is likely to be going on? Would increasing the range between cut-in and cut-off by a few pounds, such as from 20 lbs to 25 lbs make a difference? I also notice that when I turn on one of the hydrants coming from the distribution manifold near the waterer that the water starts out with great pressure, immediately drops, then surges back up as if there is a lag that has to move down the waterline to the pressure tank, then back up the line. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

We have two septic tanks and two leach fields on each side of the house. There is pipe that is sticking out of the ground in the back yard with no cap when we purchased the house two years ago. This 'line' is at a ninety degree angle from the bedroom septic tank & leach field and at least 150-200 feet away. We had the tanks pumped and asked the person about this pipe and he said he didn't know what it was for, maybe a vent. There is not a 'vent' like this for the other septic tank and field. We have had very little rain and the area around this 'vent' is very wet, soggy. Does anyone have any idea what this might be and what we need to do fix it? Thanks, Nancy
