Well water problem

Purchased 35 yr old house w/well water. Water tested ok at time of purchase, but occasionally (once or twice a month) black water spurts from faucets. Have no idea what causes this. Would whole house water filtration system cure the problem, or do I need to look into drilling new well? Hopefully, filtration will be the answer.

Disintegrating rubber can do this among other things. Could be a bad part the faucet. Could also be coming from the hot water heater or a washer hose.

If you have a bladder type pressure tank, it might have a build up on the water side of the bladder. If there's a drain tap near the pressure tank, put a hose on there and drain it off with the pump power off. While you have the tank empty, check the air pressure side (with the air valve on it). The sticky at the top of this forum has more details on pressure tanks.

I had a small tank once that pretty much ran out of air, when I boosted the air on it, a ton of black came out (from iron).

Good luck
