Black silt in water well
Hi All,
This is a great place for good advice! I have a water 120' deep water well with a 4" casing. The residence is a weekend cabin therefore the pump is only turned on while we are there. I was having a problem with a lot of air belching out of the spigot followed by fine black silt in the water, running for about a minute before the water ran clear. I put a filter in the house feed line, just after the bladder type pressure feed tank, and the water ran clear. I can't really say how many gallons I have pumped through the system, but I can assure you it was not very many, and the filter element was totally plugged to the point that water could not pass. My question is; is this silt a sign that something is wrong with the well? Is there a screen or something that is supposed to stop this silt from getting pumped? Any help will be appreciated!

Do you have a water softener on the water system?
Also the air coming through the pipes may have just knocked of mineral build up that was already on the inside of the pipes.
One way to flush out the well, "if" the specks are coming from the well itself.
Disconnect the pipes before the tank, and turn on the power, and just let the water pump out of the well for about an hour. If there is any type of sediment in the well, this will clean it out.
If it does not stop, there may be a problem with the well itself.

No. No softener. At next opportunity I will flush out the well. Question with the flush out. Will I have enough draw down for my 1/2 hp submersable to run unrestricted for an hour?

Without knowing how much water your well will produce, there is no way to answer that.
If you do try to flush out the well that way.
Have someone standing by the power.
If while running the well, the water stops flowing, turn the power off immediately.
Without knowing the production rate of the well, that is the only way to flush it out.
The only other way is to pull the pump and use air to blow the water out, but I wouldn't think you want to go that route.
