How can I stop septic smell in back yard?

I think the smell is wafting down from the roof vent. Is this normal or is there something I can do to fix it?

It is most likely normal. There are filters you can install on your vent stacks to absorb odors. A search online should turn up several brands. Odorhog is the only brand poping in my mind right now.

When was the last time you had the tank emptied???? Wet spots in the yard??? Usually if it smells there is a failure..

Have the tank emptied.

According to our local septic service, yours is one of the most common complaints from septic tank users. (Yeah, I had the problem, too.)

How long has it been since your tank was pumped?

What do you do to maintain the health of the microbes in the system? Other than not sending chlorine down the drain, I periodically add a product called CCLS which I buy from our septic service. CCLS costs about $8/quart, I use about 8oz per month. When the tank is pumped, they dump in two quarts. We still get occasional smell, but it doesn't persist like it used to.

In the normal way the heat generated by the microbes helps lift the gases up the vent pipe, however, at times of high pressure and no wind the gases sink back to the ground making a nasty smell.

This has nothing to do with the septic tank being full or empty, merely that the microbes are doing their job converting our waste to gas.
