Help Settle Marital Dispute: Is our Tree too Close to Septic Tanks?

We have a marital dispute raging in our house - I need some support.

We planted a Washington Hawthorne close to our two septic tanks. I think it's fine (it's 30 ft or so from the lines). My wife is anxious that the roots will create problems with the tanks.

Tell me I'm right

Did "We" research the properties of the planting and agree on the location?

If it was decided where and what to plant by "I", then "I" is responsible for the results. If it was decided by "We" then "We" will have to work it out mutually.

According to the original post everything was done by "We".

Wouldn't it be more important how close tree is to the DRAIN FIELD? I know that usually the drain field is relatively close... but lets say it was a hundred feet away for now... would it still be 'not' ok if 'we' planted a tree that close to the tank? Or do trees pose a danger to the concrete tanks as well?

You guys are funny. Actually, we've been married for 31 years. I seem to recall that "I" decided this location was okay. My dear, loving, wife had qualms about it being so close to the concrete tanks. We've talked about moving it, but that is something "I" would have to do and "I" don't want to do it.

My dear, loving, wife thinks that over time the tree's roots will either grow into the concrete tanks or will grow underneath and push up on them or cause problems for the pipe connecting everything.

I've convinced her that this tree is sufficiently far away from the drain field - a bit more than 35' for a tree that is supposed to have an eventual spread of 30'.

At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure the drain field is not a problem. I need to convince her that the tree will NOT be a problem for the tanks. Thus far, no help from you guys

Quick update. Did some poking around on the web.Turns out this sort of tree has a very aggressive root system AND trees with aggressive root systems CAN cause problems with pipes connecting septic tanks to each other, the house, and to the drain field.

I guess, much to my chagrin, I will be doing some digging this fall.

Thanks for your responses, but I'll have to admit to my dear, loving, wife that she WAS right. Damn......

There has to be a crack or some place that the tree can access the tanks or pipes to cause damage. A drain field has TONS of openings. Your not wrong.

However, you should move it just to keep that nagging voice in the back of your mind to be quite. Oh, wait...that voice it outside your head.
