sewer smell every time we run washer
We live in a 20yo home with a septic system that was recently inspected and found to be in good shape. For about one month, we have been having an issue with a sewer/rotten egg smell that develops in the basement every time we run our washing machine and only when we run our washer. The smell is light if we only run one load and gets progressively heavier with each load. Our washing machine is an efficient front loader that sits on the first floor just above the part of the basement where the smell is concentrated. The line from the washer is a flexible tube that goes into the wall and attaches to PVC (i can't see the attachment because its in the wall) and then exits via the PVC into the main, larger PVC that exits the basement and goes to our septic system. Thoughts??
Thank you for your help.

If it never happened before I would say check the septic tank. Possibly your field is not draining well, and the level in the sewer line is higher.
Especially when draining with standing water in the pipe upon discharge vents get blocked. This also causes other traps to get siphoned out.
Any nearby sinks?
Air needs to come out of the washer stand pipe when vents get blocked and no other fixtures are near.
Hope you understand this. That would be the logical answer because plumbing dont just change in the walls.
Plus I have seen it happen many times. Even in my own house.

Hi Lawrosa
Sorry to bother you with a similar question. As an ex Monmouth cty resident (Highlands) we moved to Georgia a year ago. We have a septic about 6 year old and until now we did not have any problems. For the last month each time we use the washing machine we have a sewer smell in the bathroom coming from one of the sinks. The washing machine is on the same level, but not in the bathroom. It is in an extension of the kitchen. I assume that the washing machine's pipe is connected to the sink and from there it goes into the septic, but hey what do I know! Any help will be appreciated... Thanks

6 years, have you ever had the septic emptied??? If not that would be the first thing to do. If the line is filling because the septic is waterlocked that is usually the first cause of drainage issues. The main my drain but may be partially filled and blocking vents and such.
Let us know what you find.
