Irrigation pump problem

Hello, new here. I'm stumped and frustrated with a new pump I replaced recently. It works fine with the sprinkler system but I am having problems using it with the hose to water the garden. I'm using two hoses, one with a sprinkler on it and one with a hand sprayer. When I start watering it will cycle a few times and then the pump will run constantly. When I shut off the water to the hoses the pump does not shut off. It hovers just under the cut off (40psi) never gaining any more pressure. To fix it I have either turned on the sprinkler system for a few minutes or taken off the hand sprayer and let the hose run without restriction for a few minutes. This would allow the pump to pressure up and shut off. That is until tonight, nothing I can do will allow it to pressure up. I have checked all over the web for troubleshooting this problem but can't find anything. I appreciate any guidance you can give. Thank you, Rob

I think you have an air leak in the suction line. Probably at a threaded connnection close to the pump.
