well pump

I have a 1/2 hp well pump that supplies our water to the house from a shallow well. Recently I have noticed that the pump kicks on often even when no water is being used. I checked it out this morning by closing the ball valve to the main pipe coming out of the well pump, which is in my basement. The pressure at the pump slowly went down even with the valve closed. I put soap water around the fittings on the well but didn't see any leaks. Are there any suggestions to how to fix this problem? Could it be a bad pressure switch? Thank you.

The well pump

It might be the check valve in the suction line leaking back ever so slowly.
