Floor Drain Safety Cover?

Hi,

I live in a house I do not own, and the laundry hookups are in the basement. The floor drain is almost immediatly in front of the washing machine. Washing machine has great leveling legs... that is not the problem.

The problem is that the "pit" for the drain makes it a stumbling hazard right where we need to go to put clothes in the washer, start it, etc... The "pit" is about 4 feet in diameter with about a 2 inch center depth.

What can I use to make this a safer place to walk, stand, etc? It needs to be somewhat porous so as not to compromise the drain, but can be taped down so that it doesn't shift with use. In my mind I'm picturing a gigantic sump-hole cover of some sort, or possiblly some kind of grating...

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forums.

Talk to your landlord, this is a liability issue they need to address.

Is it a gradual slope to the center or an actual 2" step down? If it's a step you could put a 3/4" piece of plywood in there sitting on some evenly spaced 1 1/4" blocks. Leave a 1/2" space around the edges for the water. But like Mitch says, it's the landlord's problem so suggest it to him.

It is a gradual slope, so fitting supports would be somewhat of a headache. Plus, if there were to be water on the floor, wouldn't plywood get goopy?

What about building a step or landing to set in front of the machines? You could build it about 2'x5' and make the height 4"-6" - whatever works best. Once you get used to stepping up, the trip hazard would be gone and gaps can be left in the framing to allow the water to drain when that becomes an issue.

The platform does sound workable. I will look into it. Thank you!
