Sump pump won't stop running

Our sump pump is about 6 years old and we recently noticed that the motor won't stop running. There is not water being pushed outside and when I unplug the unit, the basin does not fill with water so it seems it should not be running. When we push the floater down manually, the motor still continues to run.

Any ideas what the problem may be?

That "floater" has a mercury type tip switch in it. Does your sump pump plug into the floater plug and then into the wall or is the floater connected directly to the pump. ?

The floater is connected directly to the pump.

On a unit where the float switch is connected directly into the pump....you can't service the switch.
You'll need to replace the pump.
