Well system filter filling with silt lately

This is a drilled well system used to supply the house. The well was drilled to 405' in 2001 and has a submerged 220v jet pump, I believe. I have a clear in-line filter, which I usually replace the element in monthly.

Earlier this week pressure in the house dropped dramatically. When I checked in the well house, I found the filter filled completely (outside the element) with silt. I replaced the filter and had to replace it again yesterday due to the amount of silt. This morning it had about 2-3" of silt buildup already.

When the pump was placed, the installer said he was setting the pump at about 50' up from the bottom.

Does it sound like the silt level in the well is now up close to the pump? What actions would you recommend? I will try to include pictures of the well head and pump house piping arrangement.

I have two pressure tanks because there was already one installed when we switched over from the bored well to the drilled well.

I was unable to add photos, but if you send a separate message I can email them for you to look at if needed. Thanks

Is your well casing steel or PVC? If it is steel it is possible that the casing has rusted through and is allowing surface water & silt to enter the well.

Thanks for the response. The casing appears to be 6" PVC well casing. I saw that it had printing on the side that said well casing, but I'm guessing on the size.

My pics appear to be too large to be uploaded. Will have to change the settings on the camera.

Here is the setup inside the pumphouse, in case that may have something to do with the problem, even though I don't think it would. Then again, this is not my area of expertise.Name: Pumphouse piping1.jpg

I am glad that you clarified that the well casing is PVC. You are right, from the picture it looks like steel.

Does your well have a data plate saying it's depth and length of casing installed?

Yesterday I spoke with a tech from a local well drilling company. He suggested that the first pressure tank had some silt buildup in it that was now moving into the filter. He suggested that I flush the tank. I flushed it last night and plan to flush it again today.

I would likely kill power/drain system/ check tanks precharge, and make sure theyre empty. if so I would break the union at the well head, return power and let the pump run full flow on the ground a while. get a white bucket and take a look at exactly what ur getting out of the well. jmo

Flushing the pressure tank seems to have alleviated the problem, at least for now. I will watch it closely to see if I need to take further actions. Thanks for the help.
