HELP! Septic Tank lid (Entire Slab) is cracked
Hello All
My septic tank lid (slab) is cracked severely and somewhat caved in. It looks like it has been this way for a number of years. I'm assuming that it has some sort of re-bar steel mesh holding it together. The question I have is instead of replacing the slab (don't want pieces falling into tank) can I just pour a new slab on top of it and pinning the old into the new slab? or is just better to replace the slab. BTW...this is 1000 gallon tank.
thanks for the feedback!

You mean the whole top of the tank right? Not the access lid?
I believe you will need to replace the whole tank. I dont think the top is removable as far as I know. If it is you would be best to replace and not pour a new one on top.
I am sure the health department will not be too happy when they find out.
You should be concerned more with someone falling through. Child? Adult? They will be overcome by fumes and lack of oxygen and probably expire instantly....

Post a picture.
There is no "lid" on any septic tak I've ever seen. There may be one of more access doors with rebar handles that can be removed to clean it out.

I had one of those here on my property, built around 1963 or so. The tank was cinder block (cinder, not cement) with a slab top (I assume poured separately and moved into place). In my case, it was never used, the town apparently made the builder install public sewers into the neighborhood before it was ever used.
That was the first time I've ever seen one like that, but I'm sure they are out there

Replace the top.
Our septic installer accidentally hit the corner of the lid of our 1000 gal concrete tank with a bulldozer while spreading out the field sand, splitting a large piece of it. He had to have a new top delivered.
The septic tank manuf/dealer will send a hoist truck and should be able to lift off the old lid without dropping too much concrete inside. Probably best to have the tank pumped out just before (and then dont use it.. ), so that you can inspect/remove (or just leave) broken chunks.
If you try to leave the broken lid in place, someday it might snap off a large chunk that breaks your inlet or outlet pipe etc.

My bad tank lid
We just had a major dumping of rain lastnight. I heard over 2 inches. My tarp was too small and all the rain went into tank. My leech field is flooded

I spoke to another contractor today and he heard of people pouring concrete over old but he recommended to remove and put new. Looks like the consensus is to remove an put down a new slab.
Thanks for all the input

I would replace the tank.
Also when lifting the lid leave the tank full if thats what you intend. If it breaks and drops in the empty tank you will crack the bottom of the tank. Then you will need to replace. At least with water and poop in there it will slow any pieces down.
Seams like you have no seal. Any rain and your field gets flooded? Dont think that septic tank is code. Now that its being touched you need to bring it to code.
Not sure though. You can check with the town but call anonymously. Otherwise the health department will be knocking on your door.
