Sounds like something is running inside the well

I have lived in my house for over a year and have not heard this until recently.

Dont know much about well systems, so will describe as best I can.

About a week ago I started hearing what sounded like water running from inside the well in my back yard. The pressure tank is functioning properly.

I just opened the well cover and can hear either water running or the sump (maybe) running.

Would like to know what is running, is it supposed to, and if not what do I do to fix whatever is wrong.

Thank you for any assistance.

Scott

How do you know the pressure tank "is working"?
What sump, there is no sump in a well system?
Is there a pressure gauge on the pump or pressure tank?
What type well is it?

How do you know the pressure tank "is working"? I dont for sure - after further checking the pressure gauge on the pressure tank is dropping to 38psi then cycling up to 62psi, then dropping back to 38 and cycling up again. Does this mean the pressure tank is inop>

What sump, there is no sump in a well system? Mistype on my part - pump.

Is there a pressure gauge on the pump or pressure tank? Yes, see above

What type well is it? Deep drilled well

Thanks again to all who know more than I do on this

Welcome to the forums.

It sounds like you have a leak some place. The pressure should build......the pump should shut off and the pressure should be maintained until something uses water. If you aren't knowingly using water then it sounds like a leak that you need to look for.

Look for a valve between your storage tank and the house. Try shutting that off and see if the pressure stabilizes. You need to address this situation ASAP as it's not good for the deep well to be short cycling like that.

On a re-read of you original post..... you may have a break/leak in the pipe that connects the pump to the surface. Also requires immediate attention.

k1 the valve PJ is talking about may look like this - pointed to by the white arrow in the picture.

Or it may look like the one with the red handle in this picture. (Not the one with the black handle - that valve should not be there in the first place.)

I think the guys are on the right track with it sounding like a leak.
Taking a things a bit further with a few questions....

How big is the well (simply a pipe/drilled well, or larger/dug well)?
Is your pump on surface (probably with or near the tank) or in the well itself?

Lastly... Can you post up some photos of what you see (top of well, inside if you can see something, tank, pump, etc) (How to post pictures instructions)?
