help with well water/pump

So, we have an older home with a shallow well, originally, we primed the pump through the pressure switch fitting and got it to flow. The pressure would never get above 25 psi, with a 20 -40 pressure switch. but it did pump water. The next morning, it had lost prime. We replaced the foot valve and the whole jet assembly and tried to prime the pipes at the pump by taking the barbed fittings apart in the craw space. It only pumps the water that i put in, then nothing, I do have 3 barbed fittings on both the 1/14 " and 1" lines. Should i re-pipe to hard pipe where the poly comes in to limit the barbed fittings, and should i have filled the 25' drop to the pump in the well with water before we hooked it back to the lines going to the house? When i prime it from the craw space, it only takes about a gallon of water. Think it should take more.. Have about 50 ft from pump to well rings, then 25 ft of lift. Any thoughts are appreciated...John
