contact box at well in closed but no water

The contact box is stuck in the closed position and the pump is hot, but its not running and only at 20psi on a 30/60 switch (i think). Thanks for any help!

If your contacts are shut and the motor is hot, remove the power from the pump immediately. You may be burning up your motor. Once you remove the power the contacts should release. Do they? If not, replace the switch. Hopefully you didn't fry the motor, but I wouldn't take bets on it.
How do you get 20 psi with a motor that isn't running?

20psi is what the gauge says. I tripped the breaker and the contacts are still touching.

If you only have 20psi in your system the switch won't open. It will only open when you have 50psi in the system.

You pump may require a new starting capacitor. Is there a make and model number on the motor ?

SSJE is the model number. It's a 1hp jet pump that mounts over the well casing. In the link below is the manual for your pump. They do not show a replacement starting capacitor but they mention it in servicing. There could also be an issue with a centrifugal start switch. That is not listed or mentioned in pump servicing.

You could turn power off to the pump and remove the end cover to see if there is a visibly changeable capacitor. In the link is the number for Sta Rite. You could check with them in regards to a replacment.

I changed the contact box and things seemed to work for the first two cycles, but when I left the water on the water just ran out and the pump shut off at the same time, with the contacts still touching.

When the contacts were still closed and the pump shut off by itself... was the motor hot to the touch?

Yes. I turned the power off to the pump, and was going to wait till today to work on it. But I had to turn it on to get some water (at night time) and i saw a glow coming from the pump. The wires inside the pump are burning, couldn't see this before due to the pump position. Any recommendations on where to buy a new or rebuilt pump? I live in orl fl. Found them online at the sta rite site for $400 anything cheaper? And could I change it from vertical to horizontal? Thanks for your help and time!

A glow coming from the pump That sounds like the breaker for that motor may be oversized.

In looking at the system manual it doesn't appear that you can convert it to vertical operation.

Try calling around to local well companies in your area for prices.
