I have a septic tank in my front yard. The cover is a few inches below the soil and it's covered with dirt and a poor attempt to grow grass. I just had it pumped last year and it's I believe a 1000 tank for a house with my wife, myself, and a 5 year old. We live in NJ and we have had some extremely cold weather recently. I noticed that the area above the hatch which is usually bare of snow because of the heat has something new. The dirt is frozen, but has large pockets and almost seems aerated. If I step on it, it crunches down. It's raised up from the rest of the lawn. I assume this is because the moisture in the dirt was created by melting snow and then when the temp reached the point that overcame the heat, it froze, expanded , and created this effect. Has anybody seen this, am I correct, or is there something more sinister going on here? :)

Tuesday night our 2 line jet pump stopped delivering water. My wife used it all day but then left and when we returned home we noticed it running very loud and went to check and saw that there was no water pressure. My first assumption was that the pump had malfunctioned because it is was old and had a lot of corrosion on it. I replaced the pump and then primed it but it is still wouldn't deliver water. The confusing thing though is it isn't losing its prime. Is there a possibility that one the the my lines could be frozen? I'm running out of ideas here and my well pit is old so it is buried i plan to try to dig it up this weekend but I'm having problems find anyone who will service my jet pump as everyone wants to just replace the jet pump with a submersible plus the i face the problem of bring my pit up to state code and bring it above ground. Thanks for any advice anyone may have.
