HELP! Sewage Smell in only one room! Where is it coming from?????
I have a larger tudor from 1910. The sewer lines were just updated down to the laterals. I also had my vents brought up to code. Here is the issue: We just got the biggest rain of the year and one of my rooms smell like sewer! I crawled under that space think something has died or cats were reliving themselves, but nothing! It actually did not smell under that room in the basement? I do have a sump pump that hasn't been working on a complete other corner of the house (about 75-100 feet away). I just fixed it. Can that be it? Why would it be only in that room and not in the basement or any other area closer to the sump location. That room must be the farthest point? There is a bar sink in the room, but the vents were just redone 6 months ago and the smell is not coming from the vent area, but rather a corner of the house away from the sink? I am at a total loss- THOUGHTS?

Unused drain?
I have a shower stall in my house that I don't use. Every month or so I have to pour a glassful of water in the drain or I start getting sewer gas coming up through the drain. All drains have to have water in them and most get the water through ordinary use.
If the drain dries out, the stench is very strong and it may seem the smell is in another part of the house.

Did you check outside to see if it smell out there as well?
Run water in all sinks to be sure the traps are not open.
Are you on a septic system or a city sewer? Heavy rains can overload a city system and create a lot of problems in a neighborhood. Homes connected to a system provide direct venting from those in-ground drain pipes.
Do you have any floor drains in a basement, garage, or crawl space?

Bud- Thank you for responding. I am on city sewer. The lined runs about 10 feet underground at the lateral into the street side about 25 ft in front of the house. So downhill flow is there? None of my neighbors have issues? I do have a garage (detached) that is about 15 ft from the smelly room separated by a walkway? I have W/D set up there that are actively being used.
No floor drains in basement other that the sump pump. Crawl space under that specific room smells clean? the basement area does not extend to that room, just crawl space.

Is there a bathroom close to the smelly room? I have seen toilets with leaking wax rings leak toilet water between the layers of the bathroom floor. The bathrooms sheet vinyl or tile can prevent smells in there but the water and smell emerges in an adjoining room with a porous floor. This would have nothing to do with your recent rains though.
Is it possible you have a leak in the roof? Maybe water got down into the walls or ceiling of that room. Not enough to be visible but enough to activate a musty or moldy smell.

Pilot Dane-
I will check the toilet in the adjoining room, but the crawl space under that area is clean and un-smelly.
The smell is not mold- really sulpheric/sewery.
Thank you,
Anna

With the recent work you described I would be inclined to be calling that contractor back. S/he knows where the vents pass through the walls and missing a connection unfortunately does happen.

If you really suspect the sewer lines then the only real way is a smoke bomb test or mint test...
You drop these down the stack and tape the stack.. Follow the smoke or mint smell to find your cause...
