Hello everyone, we have recently moved into a new home in MN that was built in 2006 with a private septic system, we are not new to septic systems as all of our houses have had them, however on this property there are 15 (4"-presumably vent pipes) spread down the lateral leach field lines.. The last few houses we have owned have not had pipes like these across the leach field, as far as we saw, they may have been cut down already and had been a little shallow. I am wondering if I can cut these down to ground level and put the caps back on as it is taking up almost a 1/4 acre of my yard. please note that the septic tank is behind, about 10-20 yards, and has the normal 2 large manhole covers, the smaller 8-12"? cover, and the 2 clean out pipes. My water went out a couple days ago. After some troubleshooting I determined it was a short in the pump/wiring somewhere down in the well. As the well is only 17ft to water (and about 2ft wide), and the old pump was pretty old as far as I know, I figured I would just replace everything. The old pump was also submersible, which I thought was odd for such a shallow well. Anyway, so I got a 3/4HP Flotec jet pump, a 7gl pressure tank (ya, it's small, I plan to add another larger tank when I get a bit more money), 1 1/4" poly run about 50ft from the house to the well and then 20ft+ down. I have 3/4" from the pump to the tank, and 1/2" existing into the house. I got it all hooked up, but when I start it it quickly goes up to 50 psi and then shuts off (as it should), then drops to 20-30 psi within a few seconds, then goes back up to 50 psi in about 10 seconds, and repeats over and over. If I shut off power it settles at anywhere between 10 psi and 35 psi, usually dropping initially, then the gauge slowly moving back up. I hear lots of water rushing around when it shuts off. Everything is exposed, the new pipe is laying across the yard, the line to the house is all visible, there are no water leaks anywhere. I pulled the line from the well and verified the foot valve was in place, and held the valve above the water when the pump shut off to see if water was come back out of the valve, but nothing. The line feels full of water, and I have this problem whether water is running in the house or the valve is shut off 5ft away from the pump. I also have good consistent pressure in the house with no air. So what is going on? I haven't directly checked the pressure of the tank (going to tomorrow), and I haven't played with the pressure switch. The tank says is preset at 25 psi. I know this is a few psi low, but that couldn't be causing the problems could it? Or maybe it isn't really at 25 psi. Is the distance too far? I though the depth was the main concern. There is a slight decline from the well to the pump, then about 1ft up to the pump inlet. What else should I be looking at? It's a pretty simple setup, but this is my first time doing anything well related, so maybe it's something really stupid. Thanks in advance for any help Ben
