water hammer?
I live in the country and have a private well.
We built our house in 1984 and the only thing done to the water system was a replacement of the pressure tank(bladder type) about 20 years ago.
Just last week I noticed that periodically when someone turns on a faucet (or does anything to draw water) the well pump comes on to recharge the pressure tank I can hear a single bang sometimes. Bang is probably a bit of an exaggeration, but it's definitely a loud noise that sounds like the a water pipe has hit something, another pipe etc.
I've tried to cause this so I can see what is happening with the water supply line where it leaves the pressure tank, but of course I can't.
I'm calling this water hammer because I don't know what else to call it, even thought I thought water hammer occurs when you turn OFF a faucet, or the toilet has refilled and shut OFF. I did not think it happened when you turned a faucet ON?
Anyway, I'd like to know if anyone has any thoughts on this.
As I said, this just started last week and it's not consistent, nor can I seem to make it happen.
I'm a bit concerned here... any thoughts are appreciated.

Hello... IMO first thing is to check the air pressure in the well tank., This needs to be done with the pump off and well tank drained down, After you tell us what that reading is we can help further..
What psi is the switch? ie: 40-60????
The psi in the well tank should be set 5 psi below cut in...

OK, tried it, several times. Can't make it happen that way either
Is there anything I can check in the house that might cause this?
Like I said, I've NEVER had this issue in 35 years here, and it's inconsistent....
Sometimes you hear the noise, sometimes you don't. But when you hear it, you can hear it all the way up on the second floor of the house
