Do you really need little stones in the basin?

I know you should lay some stones before inserting a sump pump basin into the pit, but assuming that I have a small stand for my pump, would I still want to put the stones and then place the stand on the stones ?

I don't see how they would filter the water anymore once it gets into the basin

thanks!

Stones don't really belong in the pit but if you put the type of pit in with an open bottom then you'll have them.

It is a good idea to sit the pump on bricks or something similar so that it doesn't suck up mud and debris from the bottom.
