Pressure pump wont switch off
Hi Everyone...
I have a small 1/4 Hp pressure pump installed because of intermittent low pressure from supply.
Its only a few weeks old, so everything is new.
Today I noticed the pump kept running quite a bit after I closed the kitchen sink tap.. I went to check if other taps were open.. nope.
Washing machine tap I turned off, also the toilet just in case.
So.. after that l was confused cuz no taps open..but pump running??
It switches in and out as it gets pressure as per normal.. about every 4-5 seconds.
I can see inside the tank it works from, so i made a mark at the water level, tied off the float valve so it wouldn't refill, and let it run for about 20 mins.
The water level didn't drop at all.. so there doesn't appear to be a pipe leak someplace. It would have to be a BIG leak as the pump switches in every 4 -5 seconds as usual.
I have not had a chance to check if dirt has clogged the pressure switch sensor, but it is mounted on a metal supply pipe of about 3/8 dia so would be hard to block that off I think.
I tried opening the plastic bleed plug a tad while it was running to see if there was air in the system.. nope.. that seems to be ok.
If I switch the pump off, and open that bleeder again, the water pressure drops quite a bit, and when re activated, the pump runs a few seconds longer on the first burst, then settles back to cycling every 4-5 seconds, so it seems normal.
The sensor switch contacts are clean and they open and close normally.
Please see the attached pics of pump and the plumbing diagram.
Please has anyone got any ideas??
l'm beat on this one.
Thanks

Welcome to the forums! Did you prime the pump? What pressure is your tank set at? It should be 2 lbs lower than the cut in pressure of the pump. You can check it with a tire gauge and add or subtract air once it is empty to the required pressure.

Hi Chandler..
Thanks for your suggestions..
The pump works fine, so its definitely primed.. as for pressure, the cutoff switch says
ON 1.1 Bar OFF 1.8 Bar. I dont have a tire gauge.. sorry.
However, I did take the Sensor unit off the pump to see if it had something blocking the pipe, nope .. clean as a whistle.. .
So.. I wonder if the Non return valve could be not seating properly and allowing water to bypass.. This could explain it ?? I will get one from the pump suppliers and replace it just in case.. if that doesnt work.. l'm off to the looney bin..

Problem solved
Hi Chandler
Ok found it.. It was a split in the rubber non return valve, allowing water under pressure to bypass.
This caused the pump to cycle water back into the holding tank, so it was just going in a circle.. no leaks. I hope this will be of use to others who have a similar problem
Thanks
Gary
