Is this a well?

Moved into this house last year this is in the corner of the property and looks like a well but I have no idea what a well looks like

I did attempt to measure it and my guess is about 40 feet deep

Welcome to the forums Nick!

Hard to say just from that pic Is there a pipe going down or is it just a hole in the concrete?

Then it's probably a well casing. To make it operational you'd need a drop pipe with foot valve and a pump of some kind. Since it's been uncapped - it's not to be trusted for human consumption!!! should be fine for irrigation.

You could probably get a well guy out there to give you an estimate on getting it operational, he'd also verify if it is indeed a well.

The easiest/simplest thing to do would be to cap it. Unless there are threads at the top of the casing you can utilize, I'd tapcon a piece of metal to the concrete covering the hole.

Did it have water at the bottom of the cylinder ?

Then how can you conclude that it "looks like a well" ?

What's the diameter of the casing (pipe) ?

What's that unit sitting next to the hole ?
