Water filter yellow after about 3 weeks

We have a community well (43 homes or so). I have a cheapo filter at the street which I change every month or so - and a RO system under the kitchen sink for our drinking water etc. We have lived in this house for 3 years now. Often the filter at the street has some black spots - but this morning the filter is brilliant yellow.

Do you think that is caused by rust ?

It sure looks like rust.
As the iron particles are exposed to oxygen they turn darker and then reddish.

Does someone routinely have the water checked/analyzed from your "community" well ?

I sent an email to the president of the HOA earlier and he responded that the water is checked every Oct/Nov or so. I do remember receiving an email around that time suggesting that everyone start adding a cap full of chlorine periodically to their water tanks - but no explanation as to why.

He also said that in the 11 years he has lived here he has noticed the yellow color as well and attributed it to a combination of pollen and volcanic ash.

So anyway - now I have the cheapo filter at the street. Then I've added a better quality filter as the water leaves the roof based water tank and the under the kitchen sink 5 filter RO system.

(I don't think I ever asked you - where in Jersey are you ? I was born in Englewood, raised in Palisades Park and went to HS in Oradell).

Didn't I go to Boy Scout camp in Morristown ? No-Be-Ba-Sco ?

Yes - I could see the Empire State building from the back yard....
