Well pressure Guage popped

Today I noticed that the rubber lug on the top of my well pressure Guage appears to have blown off. The plug was about 2 feet from the Guage and there was a trail of oily dots in the concrete (the liquid that was inside the guage).
Anybody as on what could have caused this to pop off like this? Will this need to be replaced now that some of the liquid from inside it is gone?
Well appears to be turning in and off without any issues and there is no water coming from any pressure relief valves.
Thanks

Sounds like gauge went bad but without a gauge to know pressure just guessing.

If the sealing plug is popped and oil squirted out... the gauge probably should be replaced. You don't need an oil filled gauge for a water system though. A less expensive dry gauge will work just fine. Oil filled gauges are normally used on machinery that has vibration. The oil helps cushion and dampen the vibration but also adds to the cost.
