I've got a house where both the well pump and lake pump cycle on and off a lot. I think the tanks are undersized. The house has a well approximately 100' deep. I don't know the submersible pump size. The tank is a 20 gal pressurized well tank. It takes 19 seconds for the pump to cycle off once it comes on with no fixtures drawing water. The house has 5 toilets, 5 showers, 9 sinks, 3 spigots, dishwasher and a washer for a total of 24 fixtures. It's a tankless hotwater heater. What size should the well tank be? I've found one website that says to multiply the number of fixtures by 3 to get the minimum tank size. In my case, that would be 24 x 3 or the next size up from 72 gal. Other websites call for the pump size to calculate the tank size but I don't know that. What is the proper tank size? I also have a a lake intake with a 1 HP jet pump that feeds 2 spigots to runs 1 to 4 sprinklers. The lake to pump height is less then 10'. It currently only has a 3 gal tank. Not surprising the pump only cuts off for a very short time before it comes back on. What size pressurized tank should it have? Thanks,

Warning.. long explanation.:) Hello everyone. Here's my problems. Two days ago, Electric company accidently cut an underground cable, which knocked out our electric for 4 hours. Unfortunately, I had a sprinkler running in the back yard, which means the water line was open, which caused the pump to lose it's prime. I've only watched my brother prime this pump once, and it was a nightmare in the middle of winter. While he did it, he told me I should install a new pressure switch. So I bought one. I began to install it yesterday figuring since I have to prime the pump, might as well do it now. So began another nightmare. As I began turning the 3/8" pipe that connects the switch to the "flow control valve", all of a sudden, I heard a "pop". It cracked the plastic body of the valve. Here is a couple of pics. I know nothing about these, and can't even find any info on them. Ok, I buy this valve, and a new pressure gauge as well, and install everything. Now I was ready to try and prime this pump, which I've never done myself. However, after reading numerous articles and viewing youtube's, I decided on the only technique which seemed to apply. What I did was this. I ran a garden hose from my sons house next door. I connected a cloths washer hose to the male end of the garden hose. Then I connected the other end to an old fashioned "faucet" that is directly above the well bunker. According to the article, I should close the valve in the well, that feeds the house. This faucet is on the house side of the valve. I had my wife turn on a bathroom faucet the farthest from the pump. Then we turned on the faucet at my sons house. Within 15 seconds, water reached the bathroom. I had my wife close the bathroom faucet, and proceed to open and close each of the other faucets moving from farthest to closest to the pump. After the house line was full, I then opened the feed valve in the well, and opened a "plug" in the middle of the main line from pump to tank, to bleed any air so water could reach the pump. After I visibly could see no more air bubbles, I figured the line was full. So now, we shut off the faucet above the well, and my sons house faucet, and disconnected the washer hose from this faucet. Now, I turned on the pump. I had my wife open the farthest bathroom faucet, and she said water was coming out, but not much pressure. I had her close it. Then we opened the faucet above the well. Holy cow. It had so much pressure I couldn't believe it. I looked at the gauge and it was barely 20lbs. Now, this is where things went bad. When I pulled the cracked flow control valve, and showed it to the plumbing guy at Ace, he was amazed the valve was adjusted almost completely "closed". He said it was unusual. Ok, when I installed this valve, I had the "adjustment" screw half way in. I decided to "back it out", figuring this should increase the pressure as the pressure switch is a 30-50. Now, I really know nothing about how these systems work, but I only had intuition to go on. However, as I was backing this "adjustment" out, all of a sudden, it BLEW straight up, almost hitting me in the face. I immediately put my finger over the hole and turned off the pump and let the water pressure slowly receed until nothing came out of the hole. As of today, we STILL haven't found that adjusment screw.. It simply disappeared somewhere around the well. Ok, given these valves are $40, and I'm on a fixed income, no way was I going to buy another. However, it dawned on me. Use the old "adjuster". So, I removed it, cleaned it up like new, and am ready to install it. This is why I am here. I have no idea how to adjust this valve, and the proper way to prime this pump given the setup. There are two valves in the well besides this flow valve. One, a faucet for draining the tank, and a valve on the main line from the pump to the house. And a "plug" as I described. So there you have it. We haven't had running water in 3 days and my wife would greatly appreciate if someone here can help me. Thanks. Here's some pics.
