ATU Septic System / how to quiet ??
building new home on Whidbey Island in WA state, we are going with an ATU system that will be in-ground, with enclosure for aerator / air pump and heavy lid / cap, we are going the the NuWater system for our home .....our problem is our neighbor's ATU system, their aerator / air pump is VERY loud, this 24/7 noise is unacceptable to my wife & I (as well as the existing neighbors) so we want to propose fixes / alterations for them to get their system much quieter .....1) I am assuming this constant humming noise is, in fact, their aerator / air pump their system is utilizing - correct ?? if Yes, what are the brands of ultra-quiet aerators / air pumps on the 2017 / 2018 market for ATU septic systems that they could install to greatly quiet down their system noise ?? also, in looking over onto their property, they have an above ground set up, looks like an oversized dog crate .....per code, can a heavy enclosure or cover be built and placed over that to greatly lessen the noise ?? .....I am sure a new aerator / air pump rated to be ultra quiet would do the trick, but all advice via this post would be greatly appreciated, especially about an enclosure or cover....THANK YOU

Do you have permission to modify your neighbor's system? Have you worked out who will be paying for the work to your neighbor's system? The first step would be to contact the manufacturer of their system and see what they say about quieting the system.

we, of course, will first & foremost go to our neighbors who own the home and discuss with them, that is a given ......what I want to know is are there ATU aerators / air pumps available today that make zero noise or virtually zero noise ?? additionally, since their system is out-of-ground, does local code allow for a heavy cover or enclosure to be put over it to greatly lesson the noise impact ?? ....is it possible for an ATU septic system to be unheard or virtually unheard ?? .......

Your first step should be to contact the homeowner and work with them. Worrying about available pumps and sound enclosures is premature at this point.Yes some pumps/blowers are quieter than others.

Whether or not the system can be covered or altered in any way is up to the manufacturer or engineer that spec'd the system.
