My basement has flooded twice over the last couple of years because of power failures. I am thinking of putting a cover over the basin to keep the water from coming in. Will this cause any damage to anything else when the water backs up? Keep in mind that it would only be for less than 12 hours (most likely less than 3).

Hello, I have a question about what you guys recommend for my situation. Recently bought a house and tore out the deck due to improper installation. Underneath the deck I found what my research has led me to believe is a 3x5 dug well. My question is can I knock out the wall and top of this in order to lower the well line back below the frost line and bury the currently exposed part without causing any issues? Should insulation be added if moving the line deeper is not feasible? The lines seem to be made of a flexible material so I'm guessing as long as I'm careful not to damage the line or wire around it I should be fine but I wanted another opinion. Thanks! NOTE: In the opposite corner (Not pictured) is a pipe going into the ground that appears to be filled with a really thick grey sludge of sorts, almost has a greasy feeling to it. What would this material be? Should this sludge material be cleaned out of the pipe and filled with the correct type of concrete to ensure it is sealed off or has that already been done and that is what I'm seeing here? Called around to the city and the well company and it appears no one has kept very good records to tell if it was indeed sealed properly or not.
