It could be a check valve closing after the pump has turned off.

Or cavitation, if it's running out of water to pump.

Normally I suggest that the pump, once it starts, keep going until the pit is nearly empty.

If you set the float switches so the pump stops a tad sooner, maybe with two inches of water still in the pit, you may be able to cut down on the noise (like a child showing off with the straw after his drink cup is empty?) at stopping time.

Other reasons for not trying to suck the pit absolutely dry:
1. If the float has to hit bottom before the switch clicks off, the switch might fail to click off some of the time resulting in harmful continuous running.
2. Less dirt would be sucked up, near the end of the pump cycle.

The pump should have bleed hole in it to supply a constant supply of water to the impeller. But it's possible to negate that amount with too powerful a pump.
