We have 6 houses on a shared well. The houses are served by a variable speed pump and one of the 6 neighbors has the pressure tank in his basement. The pump control box is outside between two houses near by the culvert. We live on a cul-de-sac and our house might be equal with the next door neighbor's as being the furthest away from the pump. Here is my problem: When the neighbors (can't tell who) run water inside of their house, I get pulses down the line into my house which can be seen in a water cartridge filter that we have downstairs. You can watch the filter undulate side to side as the pulses come in down the line. Ok, big deal right? Well it also registers on the magneto in my water softener and is counting as "ticks" as water being used by the softener and creating a false reading as far as salt consumption goes. Yesterday those "ticks" were not only ticking on the water softener but also creating "bangs" inside of my hot water heater. It wasn't thermal expansion of the heater but water usage from a neighbor creating a shock wave running down the line into our house. Unacceptable for noise and dangerous to our plumbing system. So my question: would a small pressure tank (like a 2 gallon thermal expansion tank) plumbed into the main, absorb those shock waves? We've been here 16 years since the house was built and the ticks to the water softener has happened since day one. I just assumed it was the cost of doing business and a constant irritant. Yesterday was crazy loud. I texted the neighbor whose house has the pressure tank but he was away on business. When he returns I want him to check the pressure in the pressure tank as I think that it might have fallen off which is creating a larger shock wave. I also talked with a neighbor who co-witnessed the shock waves. He has a pressure gauge that he was watching and every time I experienced a "wave" he had a slight fluctuation in the reading. No one else is experiencing this phenomenon but me...

I ah aving septic tank sump pump problems, primarily due to excess rain here. My 500 (estimate) gallon septic tank has a crack in it. I plan on replacing it but it will not be real soon. A drain leads from the tank to a sump pump basin with is about 30 to 40 gallons. IT has a 1/2 hp pump and it pumps to a drain system about 40 to 50 feet away. 'Right now, my questions are: 1 How big of a sump pump basin do I need. 2 what hp pump do I need. What I have had has worked fine but I think now, for some reason, I cannot pump into the septic drain system. It is an above ground system. When it is working, I can hear the water entering the drain pit. I don't think it is working now. Thanks in advance. bus
